Rajat Kapoor Brings The Thing With Feathers, A Poignant Story of Love, Hope & Resilience, to Aadyam Theatre

India, July 8 : Some stories are etched into history’s memory. Others quietly unfold despite it. The Thing With Feathers, an original Aadyam Theatre production, is one such story. Written and directed by Rajat Kapoor, and co-written by Rabia Kapoor and Chandrachoor Rai, the play is a deeply human work set against one of the most turbulent times of the 20th century. It is not about wars, revolutions, or the world they shaped. It is a tale of people who lived through it, those who continued to fall in love, built a family, grieved losses, imagined a future, and began again.

Spanning the decades between 1900 and 1950, the play follows ordinary lives navigating extraordinary times. As the world around them shifts in unexpected ways, they are forced to confront loss and separation while holding onto hope and the possibility of starting over. Rather than looking at the events through a historical lens, the play turns its gaze towards the intimate moments that often go unnoticed, asking a question that remains relevant even today: when everything around us changes, what is it that really keeps the human spirit alive?

The play moves across continents, unfolding through lives that unexpectedly cross paths, revealing how love, chance, and resilience continue to shape in the shadow of conflict. Acting as narrators, there are birds who are silent witnesses to both history’s grand sweep and the countless lives it never recorded.

Bringing this world to life is an accomplished ensemble cast featuring Vinay Pathak, Mantra, Neil Bhoopalam, Bhavya Rampal, Waris Ahmed Zaidi, Chandrachoor Rai, Amit Purohit, Radhika Mehrotra, Vidushi Chaddha, Bhagyashree Tarke, and Aaraha Mukherjee. The play will premiere in Mumbai at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir on August 8 and 9, 2026, before travelling to Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA, on September 12 and 13, 2026. It will conclude its tour with performances at Kamani Auditorium, Delhi, on September 26 and 27, 2026.

Speaking about the play, Rajat Kapoor, writer and director of The Thing With Feathers, said,

“We started with the idea of a play based on the first half of the 20th century. We tried to find our way through the maze of possibilities in the rehearsal space with the actors and at the idea desk with the writers. A thought emerged that perhaps the story of these fifty momentous years would have an immediacy if we saw it through the lens of common folks. The play could have been many things, could have taken a thousand different forms, but eventually it became the thing that it wanted to become.”

The production is backed by an experienced creative team, with Sameer Shaikh as Executive Producer; Hussain Zaidi and Amit Purohit overseeing backstage production; Vikrant Thakar as Lighting Designer; Aditya Narayan composing the music; Meena Agarwal as Production Designer; and Isha Ahluwalia as Costume Designer.

Known for his distinctive voice across theatre and cinema, Rajat Kapoor has spent decades crafting stories that blend wit, intimacy, and emotional depth. From his directorial debut Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One to the National Award-winning Raghu Romeo and the widely celebrated Ankhon Dekhi, his work has consistently explored the complexities of ordinary lives. His theatre repertoire includes acclaimed productions such as I Don’t Like It, As You Like It, Karamjale Brothers, and Macbeth. With The Thing With Feathers, Kapoor returns to Aadyam with an original work that places human relationships at the centre of a world in transition.

As Aadyam Theatre‘s fourth production of Season 8, this play reflects the platform’s commitment to original stories that challenge, move, and inspire audiences. Through an intimate human lens, the play reminds us that while history may remember its defining moments, it is the everyday acts of love, resilience, and hope that give those moments meaning.
