Mumbai, Aug 13: Sarah & Sandeep presents Sartorial Weddings’27, a new collection built around a belief the house has carried through its bespoke tailoring practice from the start, that the finest ceremonial wardrobe is rarely the one that fills a room. It is the one that is remembered for the times to come, in the way it moves, in detail.
The collection is designed for a wearer with the eye to notice a hand finished seam before a headline silhouette, and the sensibility to let a detail reveal itself slowly rather than all at once. The idea behind Sartorial Weddings’27 came from a simple belief, that modern wedding dressing does not have to choose between tradition and contemporary style. It can move fluently between the two, each lending the other its ease. That space in between became the foundation of the entire collection, and it shows up first in how the collection is made, before it shows up in how it looks.
Design and minimalism remains the language that holds every garment together, and embroidery has been treated throughout as an extension of that rather than a decoration laid over it. Organza appliqué, tonal beadwork, layered threadwork, sculpted cordwork and softened gradients all follow the line of the silhouette, building depth and movement before settling quietly back into the fabric. It is this order, tailoring first and embellishment second, that carries through every silhouette in the collection, ceremonial or otherwise.
This finds its clearest expression in Triunity, the silhouette that has grown into one of Sarah & Sandeep’s defining identities over recent seasons. Positioned between a Bandhgala and a sherwani, it carries the formality of ceremonial dressing alongside a more relaxed, contemporary bearing, and this season brings it new embroidery narratives, softer construction and richer texture without disturbing what has made it recognisable. The Bandhgala, its more classical counterpart, is reworked here with modern embroidery placement, tonal transitions and architectural cordwork, often layered over the house’s handmade knits so that comfort and ceremony are never in competition. Come evening, that same restraint carries into black tie, tuxedos cut from some of the world’s finest mills, now among the brand’s strongest categories, arriving this season in new colourways and sculptural lapels built for a kind of dressing that never has to try. And for the hours the camera rarely catches, the welcome dinners, the after parties, the long stretch of a destination celebration, a new line of ceremonial shackets carries the same intention in a far more relaxed register, comfort without ever losing the tailoring underneath.
A parallel language runs through the womenswear, structured jackets, sculpted silhouettes and detachable elements built to carry a woman from ceremony to dinner to the last hour of the night, embroidery held in the same restraint that defines the collection as a whole. Nothing in Sartorial Weddings’27 was designed to stand still, and nothing in it was designed to be loud.
