Sep 23: Indian cinema’s diversity and creative energy took centre stage at the 72nd National Film Awards, presented by President Droupadi Murmu at a special ceremony in Ekta Nagar, Kevadia, Gujarat, near the Statue of Unity.
The ceremony brought together leading actors, filmmakers and creative professionals from across the country, celebrating films that have connected with audiences through powerful stories, performances and different forms of cinematic expression.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu highlighted the distinctive character of Indian cinema, noting that films made across different languages and regions share a strong sense of Indian identity. She also emphasised the influence that prominent artistes have on younger generations and encouraged them to use that influence to promote healthy and disciplined lifestyles.
‘Article 370’ Wins Best Feature Film
Among the major honours at the ceremony, ‘Article 370’ received the award for Best Feature Film, recognising the film among the year’s notable cinematic works.
The Best Non-Feature Film honour went to ‘Bhangar’, while ‘Ram Naam’ was recognised as the Best Documentary Film.
The awards reflected the range of subjects explored by Indian filmmakers, from contemporary issues and social themes to stories rooted in India’s cultural and lived experiences.
Yami Gautam, Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty Honoured
The acting categories brought recognition for performances that stood out during the awards cycle.
Yami Gautam was named Best Actress, while Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty shared the Best Actor honour for their respective performances.

Actor Randeep Hooda added another milestone to his career by receiving the Best Debut Director award for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.
